Thanks for calling http://damplips.in.net/ damlips.com As he says in another poem (whose corrections in his own hand Drury illustrates), “A servant with this clause / Makes drudgery divine.” The “clause” is that glimpse of divinity for which Herbert continually quests: layers of intellectual and theological complexity in his verse are veiled by the directness of his chosen words, which in less skilled hands might indeed breathe drudgery.
