Though both his father and grandfather had been horologists, the young Dominique’s interests lay in philosophy and mathematics, and it was from this perspective that he first approached the craft, finding that it “had the technological rigour of mathematics, but it also allowed a way of expressing oneself, almost as if it were painting”.
