[Vocabulary] Common Suffixes
In English, by add different ending, you will make new words. Following is a list of common suffixes and their examples: adjectives: "-able" means capable. e.g. unable, incapable... "-ful" means throughly. e.g. thoughtful, meaningful... "-proof" means attestative. e.g. fireproof, waterproof... nouns: "-er" or "-or" means a person. e.g. teacher, advisor... "-ism" means belief or name of system. e.g. capitalism, socialism... "-ist" means the person who believes that system. e.g. capitalist, socialist.. "-ion" denotes the word is a noun. e.g. confusion, congratulation... "-ian" means a person. e.g. technician... "-ness" denotes the word is an noun. e.g. goodness, illness... Others endings, such as "-ship" "-acy" "-ity" "-y" "-cy" all express the word is a noun. verbs: Ending like "-ify" "-ise" makes the word as a verb.
