"Frighten" Verbs |
Following verbs mean "frighten":
alarm = make people worried about a possible danger: "The government alarmed people with their warnings of terrorism."
give someone the creeps = frighten someone because you are strange: "I hate the way he looks at me - he gives me the creeps!"
make your blood run cold = an experience that shocks and frightens: "The way he just stood there smiling made my blood run cold."
scare = make someone frightened: "He scared her with his talk of leaving."
startle = frighten someone because they see or hear you suddenly: "He jumped out behind her and startled her."
terrify = make someone very frightened: "The bus driver terrified the passengers by driving the wrong way up a one-way street."
Following verbs describe the movement you make when you are frightened:
quiver = shake so slightly (through excitement or fear) that other people may not notice: "The cat heard a scratching noise and her tail started to quiver."
shake = when your body moves quickly because you are scared or angry: "The lights went out suddenly and she began to shake with fear."
shiver = shake because you are cold or frightened: "The ghost story was too much for the children, who were shivering with fear."
shudder = shake uncontrollably for a moment: "He shuddered at the thought of returning to the haunted house."
tremble = shake slightly: "His bottom lip trembled and he began to cry."
twitch = a small sudden movement that you cannot control: "He has a nervous twitch which you only see when he's worried."
